When I first started sending emails years ago I was shy, reserved, and not sure what I was doing.
Yet alone know what I was allowed to do – legally !
The emails were instructive and informative but were written
the way I was taught to write at school.
I even remember having one email checked over by a TAFE lecturer and she corrected the punctuation, grammar and spelling errors.
It was an exciting time. My email was edited by a learned scholar.
It went out to my list of 456 and…
Very few opens and no responses.
I was dismayed, discouraged and hurt.
I took it personally.
I thought people liked me.
Now they clearly didn’t.
After I wallowed in self pity for days I finally came around and thought about the motto I have lived by for thirty years.
“For Things To Change
I Must Change.”
I needed to do something different.
So I did.
I had been receiving emails from various sources for years.
I started to receive some emails that were different.
Sure there were copious amounts of Spam around in those days but there were emails which literally jumped out of my inbox, screaming:
These emails intrigued me. So, I started to study them.
I began taking notes.
I wrote down the different headlines and the types of offers that made me ‘act’.
Soon I became a full time email student.
I was self-educating.
I began to immerse myself in email marketing.
I scoured the internet, looking for the world’s best practices.
I read every article on email marketing I could find. I also subscribed to every single website and RSS feed I could find which contained email marketing stories.
I became so absorbed in learning how internet marketers structured their emails, that I began seeing their trigger points delicately woven like a secret code into each marketing message.
I had honed my instincts to a point of knowing what would make someone act.

I was excited about what I had discovered.
I left the old school education behind and entered a new way of writing.
First, I started to email people in my computer’s address book.
This consisted mainly of family, friends and past clients of various
companies I had consulted to.
I began keeping statistics on how they acted to each one of my emails.
At the start, people left my lists. They asked to be taken off my mailings.
So, I tweaked a few things here and a few things there. And soon my statistics, results and bank balance started to improve dramatically.
And then my first major victory came.
I successfully sold $29,700 worth of management training courses from one simple email.
That’s when I said to myself, “There’s something in this email marketing stuff !”
I also became a student of “Emotional Direct Response Advertising”.

I need to let you know I am no one special.
I was just a business person who educated myself, got excited with what I discovered and then ignited the flame with ACTION.
But I had to do this first.

I had to pull my head out of my butt and get on with it.
It was tough at the start but now it has become easier.
