Email Marketing: The Most Asked Question Is…

The most asked question I receive from my clients is:
“What Do I Write In My Emails?”

They get confused and anxious and some do nothing.

So let me add to the Email Planner and Email Step Diagram
I sent you in the last couple of weeks and give you your next tip
to writing money-making, dollar driving emails.

To overcome the difficulty of deciding what to write, simply look
at the 8 different emails report.
http://www.kurtjohansen.com/8emailoffer/

For instance, inside you will see:
Email Type Two:  Discuss a Special Event/Holiday.

With this type of email you would discuss ‘Australia Day’ this Thursday or
prepare a series of emails for Valentine’s Day on the 14th February.

The idea is to seque into an event or a holiday and piggy back off the back
of it.

Knowing what to write can be daunting but if you follow my ‘There Are Only
8 Different Types Of Emails’ you WILL be Ok.

Email Marketing: How To Plan A Series Of Emails

Hi and Welcome to 2012.

I have purposely refrained from posting about looking back at 2011 and writing
down what worked, what didn’t, and then to start writing what your goals for
2012 will be.

I mean to say all that is good but the reality is only around 2% of people actually
do it.

That leaves a massive 98% of people NOT doing it.

And I can see why.  It’s just too hard for most and the reward you expect to gain
is not worth the effort.

One motivation theory is all based on the reward you receive from the effort you
put in.  And I intend to agree.

Why would you go to exceptional lengths only to be underwhelmed by the
reward/the prize at the end.

But you do need to do something.

Don’t let the year just tick over like the clock in your bedroom, only making sense
for a fleeting 2 minutes a day when you get up and go back to bed.

The other 1,438 minutes in a day your bedroom clock is irrelevant.
Or in percentage terms, your bedroom clock is only relevant for 0.14% of the
time.

So what should you do?

What magical wand do you need to ensure your email marketing is successful in
2012?

You need to have a tool which makes total sense to you 100% of the time and
steers you in the right direction all of the time.

Well in actual fact you need two tools.

1. Is a simple Yearly Planner.  You can get these anywhere.  It’s  a planner which
allows you to program  email marketing campaigns throughout the year.

Here’s an example:

Yearly Planner

Yearly Planner

You can buy one from a stationery shop, newsagent.

Gosh check out your diary.
It doesn’t matter if you use an on-line diary or an
electronic one.  A yearly planner would exist at the
front or the back or somewhere in a drop down box.

How you use it is very simple.  Look throughout the
year and program special dates you would like to target.  These could be holidays
like, Australia Day, Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day etc.

It could be events like your birthday, opening of a store or launch of a new product.

Then…

Plan a series of emails backwards from that date.  I recommend you always look
at programming at least 4, 5, 6 and even 7 emails in a campaign.

Marketing meets Strategy

This is where you Marketing meets Strategy.

The emails are sent out in a logical, meaningful series
which takes the recipients on a journey.

A journey which ends at your pre-determined date.

To help program these emails it is necessary to have the second tool.

2. You need, what I call a Step Diagram.  This is a process whereby each email
campaign is specially crafted to link to the next one.

Email Step Diagram

I have included a picture of
what I mean here, and I find
this to be an essential
tool for all my email marketing
campaigns.

Why?

Because email marketing is
NOT about sending one email
and waiting for a response.

Email Marketing is about planning a series of emails to reach a pre-determined
goal.

Of course there is also another element to email marketing success.

Just as golfers, tennis players, swimmers or any elite professional knows; it’s best
to have a coach to help you achieve your desires results.

So if you need help check out my Coaching Plans in the middle column of my blog.

I’m sure there is one there to help you.

So there you have have: How To Plan A Series Of Emails.

It’s a simple as:

1: Planning your year.

2: Planning what you wish to say in four-seven emails; and

3: Engaging an email coach.

Email Marketing: How To Segment Using Price

When sending out emails to clients about your Christmas offerings this week try to
segment into price ranges.

i.e. Here are my less than $20 products -

Here are my less than $50 products -

Here are my over $100 products.

It will make it easier for them to choose a gift for their family and friends.

Email Marketing: They Are The Same Word

“Sales, Influence, Negotiation, Persuasion”, are all the same word.

It doesn’t matter what our belief system is; we are all into one of these.

The trick is to give so much value the person feels wonderful during and after the
experience. If you have a good product and it is fairly priced and you are ethical
then…
you are on your way.

But… When you use Email Marketing you also need to overcome a major hurdle in
that people cannot see you.

The communication process is made up of:

  • Words 7%
  • Voice 38%                       (including pitch, volume, tone etc.)
  • Body Language 55%   (Hand gestures, facial expressions etc.)

Total 100%

So… when you use Email Marketing people cannot see your face or body language nor
hear your voice – and this is a major obstacle to overcome.

Here are three things you can do to overcome this?

  1. treat them with respect and use their name in your messages;
  2. Grab their interest. Write to them as if you are talking directly to them’
  3.  Captivate their attention.

Get into the emotion of the product and service you are asking them to take on.

and above all…

be HONEST in your dealings.

Give them value, give them great offers and DELIVER.

Deliver, on time and on budget.

So don’t be shy to use these words in your vocabulary “Sales, Influence, Negotiation, Persuasion” – if you are credible they will believe.

Email Marketing: The Question They Asked Was…

I’d like to tell you a quick story if you allow me.

You see, I just received  a phone call from one of the
training organisations who use me to lecture/facilitate/
mentor/coa.ch/ train (call it what you like) for a host of
different subjects ranging from sales to management
type subjects for a variety of their clients.

The question they asked was

“Do you have ‘Time Management’ as one of the subjects
you train.”

I enquired as to ‘what context and why’ and they replied it
was because they had a client who was interested in
running a time management course for their staff.

Now Time Management is an intriguing subject because you
really cannot ‘manage time’.

There are:

  • 168 hours in a week;
  • 86,400 seconds in a day;
  • and no more, that’s it !
Why can I be so sure?
Because I have counted them over and over again and get the
same result.
You see, you cannot manage time but you can…
Manage yourself against time. Now, I have been in the field of management
training
and business coaching for  20 odd years and most times it is not about time
management at all. It is about helping people review their behaviours to look
differently
at the way they act. On many occasions it is not even about the people it’s about
how they are being led and managed.Because if the leader is not ‘leading’ it doesn’t matter what tips or
techniques you are using you will not gain better use of time
for your staff if they are allow.ed to do whatever they like.

In essence it all comes down to BEHAVIOUR.

So how’s your behaviour?  Are you doing what you should do?
Are you self determined to achieve what you set out to achieve?

Most people say they are but really their behaviour doesn’t show it.

In business there are 4 Steps that you need to take to make sure
your customers are happy.

If you would like better results in your business then take a look
at what you are doing consistently and persistently to your customers.

You see and to be blunt…

It’s a cop out to say you don’t have time.

It’s about priorities and behaviours.

Email Marketers must  be commercially smart and have a business brain.

Email Marketers must know and understand financial statements of a business and how their efforts affect them.

Email Marketers must cordinate activities with all the other business departments and not work in isolation.

Email Marketers must be able to show Outcomes or Return On Investments.

Email Marketers must be Consistent and Persistent.

but above all…

Email Marketers need to:

  • CARE, HELP and Build TRUST with their Lists.

It’s only after all these will they start to see success.

Email Marketing: It’s Here So Get On Board

I was walking through my local WestField Mall yesterday and
I thought, “It’s here isn’t it.”  ”These merchants are switched on.”

Now it wasn’t everywhere mind you but it was obviously around.

There were posters hanging from the ceilings and posters glued
to shopfronts.

And all of the smart businesses were talking the same theme.

                                              Christmas.

Take a look at what Westfield have placed on their website.

I know, I know you are thinking, “Surely it’s not Christmas time already?”

But the fact is people are now going to start thinking about what to
get their loved ones.  And if you are smart you will start to create
offers they will jump through hoops to get to.

Don’t be put off by the talk of the economy and do no marketing.

Whether they do or not, Christmas is a time people spend so
make sure you are out there in front of your customers.
