Email Marketing: I dont know what to say.

Hi Everyone

I had a client tell me, “I know I should be contacting my customers but I don’t know what to say.”  “I am a retailer, not a marketer.”

I looked at her puzzled and replied, “Aren’t you both?”

You see it’s not about being one or the other.  It’s about having an ongoing conversation with your customers to enable them to understand and stay informed how you can help them.

The problem my client had was she wasn’t thinking, “How can I help my customers?”

She was thinking, “How can I sell  my products?”

But really even if your thoughts are purely into sales let me help with a method I employ to generate ideas.

The First Point is always decide what the end result is.

You need to know where you are going with your marketing.

You need to have an end point and it needs to measurable.

Let me explain.

The purpose of an email marketing campaign is to achieve something.  I mean really have an end in mind.

Stephen Covey wrote 15 years ago “Begin with the end in mind”.

Once you have decided what the end is you can work backwards.

Here’s a tool which will help.

It’s a Step Diagram.

The Step Diagram enables me to place logical and  sequential milestones in place to achieve the desired end result.

Here’s  my diagram to show you of the process to undertake.

Step Diagram

Step Diagram

Place the target you wish to achieve at the top and then place how you are going to get there on the steps.  I call these steps milestones.

Once you have completed the milestones you can complete the Actions required to get there.

I created the Step Diagram many years ago from my studies of Strategy Formulation.

It can used in everyday life or in the work place.

I use it to help my clients strategise their email marketing campaigns.

You can do this too.

You don’t need anything fancy, just a pen and blank piece of paper will suffice.

Let’s use the Step Diagram with a real campaign.  We just had Valentine’s Day so if we use this as an example.

The End In Mind would be a Valentine’s Day Offer.  It could be something on February 14th or it could a whole week of celebrations.

At the top of the Step Diagram goes “Valentine’s Day Offer”

But try to be specific.  What are you offering?

Then along the steps (milestones) you write down what you could say in say 3-5 different email messages before Valentine’s Day.

Email One could be an Introductory Email.  i.e.  Valentines day is only a month away.  Start planing a surprise for your loved one NOW.

Email Two would be on the next step moving closer towards Valentine’s Day.  It may be about, “Time to start really thinking – ONLY three weeks away.”  And offer some ideas of presents to buy; etc.

Do you get the point?

My client can do all this.  She just didn’t have a TOOL to do it with.

But now she has.

And so do you.

What is your next big day, event, moment in your business?

Start planning your email campaigns well in advance.

I like 3-5 emails in mine but have also gone as many as 7.  It just depends on the lead time and the size of the event.

Hope this helps so you never again say, “I don’t know what to say.

Email Marketing: You are allowed to contact existing clients.

HI Everyone

There are no restrictions against a company emailing its existing customers or anyone who has inquired about its products or services, even if these individuals have not given permission, as these messages are classified as “relationship” messages under the CAN-SPAM Act.

15 U.S.C. § 7702(17)

(iii) to provide—(I) notification concerning a change in the terms or features of;
(II) notification of a change in the recipient’s standing or status with respect to; or

(III) at regular periodic intervals, account balance information or other type of account statement with respect to, a subscription, membership, account, loan, or comparable ongoing commercial relationship involving the ongoing purchase or use by the recipient of products or services offered by the sender.

In Australia we have what is know as Inferred Consent.

Which means if you have done business in the past there is reasonable expectation you will contact a customer in the future.

What this means to the email marketer is do not be afraid to contact past, existing clients with new offers on your products and services.

Email Marketing: New Devices But The Three Principles Will Stay The Same.

Hi Everyone

I am one of these weird guys who receive copious amounts of reports from various companies espousing the virtues and the flaws of email marketing.

Some of these reports insist we should be using technically advanced methods of creating emails.

Most of them agree though; Email is not going anywhere.

Let me put at rest some of the myths I have been reading.

Email, or delivering a message direct by electronic means, WILL NOT disappear.

Regardless of the popularity of social media sites like Facebook and Twitter, email in-box numbers world-wide will still be open for legitimate marketers to send messages to.

In fact, the number of email accounts outstretch any social media customers by a massive number.

What will change though is the way people may read their emails.

For instance, Smart Phones numbers are growing so are PC Tablets.

So rather than people reading emails via a traditional PC they will adjust to read their emails via these new electronic devices.

What does this mean to the email marketer?

Firstly, the three principles of email marketing will never change.

1. Gather a list of people, customers, clients.

This so essential in email marketing.

If you have an existing business grab customer names today.  Place them in a list  so you can have the ability to send them a targeted message.

I recommend to all my clients have a ‘MAIN LIST’ and then segment or categorise this list.  In simple terms,
“Can you break the main list up into smaller segments or categories?”

Let me explain further.

If you own a restaurant, maintain a “Main List” but also have separate lists of people who like certain meals.  i.e. Steak Lovers, Pasta Lovers etc.

You could even go as far as creating lists  for Red Wine Lovers, White Wine Lovers,  Boutique Beer Lovers.

If you have an online store always maintain a “Main List” but can you segment this list into what someone may have bought.

Recently I sent out a select email offering one-on-one free coaching to people who had downloaded my Email Report: ‘There Are Only 8 Types of Emails”.

I could do this because I maintain separate lists.

So get to it. Be creative and segment your Main List now.

The second principle of email marketing which will never change is:

2. Build a Relationship With Your List.

Don’t try to sell your products and services to everyone all the time.  I am not an advocate of selling in every email but it is OK to let people know what you have new etc.

It is our responsibility to let every person know what products and services we have which could help them.  If we don’t we are guilty of negligence in our business.

The way we let people know though is so important.

Limit the hard sell.

In fact all successful marketers will tell you, you shouldn’t be selling but informing.

If you have targeted the right list, your customers will know if the product or service best suits them and will seek you out.

Provide people with useful information.  This is crucial to building a relationship.

For instance I provide a free book “7 Killer Tips To Get Your Emails Read” free from my site.  If you follow the steps you will more successful in your email marketing then you are today.

Once you have Built A Relationship you can work on specific offers to your clients.

3. Make An Attractive Offer

This offer can be made after a meaningful relationship has been established.
Don’t get caught up with a new product or service you are offering.  Look to see how it helps your “Lists”.

If you have established a credibility in the market place people will be happy to follow you and buy from you.

But only after…

You have demonstrated ‘care’ and only after you have demonstrated ‘competency’.

Did you see I used the word competency?

Most people believe they have to get to ‘Expert’ status.

Whilst this may be desirable, research over the past 50 years reveals Leaders only need to be Honest, Have Vision, Be Inspiring and have Competency.

So, demonstrate how your products and services have helped others and this may be enough if you have the other Leadership traits in place.

Again Email Marketing is going nowhere.  It is still the most cost effective and affordable method for a business to market.

As long as you follow proven formulas and steps then

1. Maintain a list;

2. Build a relationship; and

3. Offer a meaningful products or services;

then you will find it doesn’t matter if people read emails via mobile phones, PC Tablets or the traditional PC then they will happily allow you to email them.

Email Marketing – Beware About Emailing Frequency

Hi Everyone

A question I am continually asked is, “How often should I email my clients?”

The answer is a resounding, “It depends.”

Because…

It does.

All client lists and relationships are different.

But let me help you with a more strategic answer here.

To suddenly increase the frequency of emails to attract short-term sales could be counter productive.

Create a yearly email marketing strategy.

However, in saying this…

Christmas time brings up an ideal opportunity to increase email frequency.

Why?

Because people are looking to spend money somewhere on someone.
So why shouldn’t it be with you?

There are 10 shopping days left for Christmas.  Create an email marketing plan to send out a minimum of 5 emails during this time offering a fabulous deal on your products or services.

You will be so glad you did.

Plus…

They will be used to seeing you in their inbox which means you have created an awareness with them to send emails more frequently next year.

Email Marketing: At The Centre Of Social Networking

Hi Everyone

A new report soon released by The Relevancy Group discusses how Email marketing is at the centre of all Social Networking.

You can download the entire report here:  REPORT.

It is best revealed by this diagram.

Email is at the centre of all Social Media

Email Is At The Centre Of All Social Media

As everyone has an email address and most often more than one email address – Email Marketing is so RELEVANT in today’s world.

“We need an email address to purchase goods online, conduct banking and even create social profiles.  MySpace is opening up its closed newtwork to email traffic and it is understood Facebook will follow suit which makes these social network sites look more like ISP’s” – the report further discusses.

For sophisticated email marketers the need to channel messages to the  right person is now more important than ever.

Segmentation of your Lists and creating sub-groups will allow the email marketer to target the right message to the right person at the right time.

If you are not using email marketing in your business – WHY NOT ?

The relevancy of it is so important in today’s market place.

Email Marketing: Sorry I Have To Tell You This

Hi Everyone

“Sorry I Have To Tell You This”

For those who know me personally you are aware I
have been into marketing and motivational type products
etc. for well over 30 years.

I’m one of those funny guys who buys the books, the tapes,
goes to seminars and walks up to speakers and introduces
themselves.

My library looks like the “Who’s Who” of the marketing world
over the last 50 plus years.

I know…But that’s me.

For the past 14 years I have been out on my own making a
living i.e NO BOSS – and YES – a very handsome one at times;
(multiple racehorse ownership, a luxury b.each apartment, multiple property
developments & the latest model cars to name a few extravagances)

I always thought I could do things on my own.

You know; I don’t need help to make money or a very good living.

But…

Then I listened to a video today from one of my marketing buddies in
the States and I heard these words.

And it hurt. Yes, hurt.

He said:
“Sorry, but I have to tell you this, but if there is a problem
with your business it’s probably YOU !”

Now, he wasn’t speaking direct to me. He was speaking to the
hundreds or thousands who were going to watch the video, but
he may as well have been speaking to me.

Because…

His words hit me direct in the heart, like a crossbow arrow piercing
through my chest and blazingly protruding from my back.

I thought, “OUCH – That HURTS”

Why ?

Because he was Right !

Until you can admit you need someone to help you in your
business you won’t get the results you deserve. PERIOD !

You see, we can’t do it alone. Even a lone sprinter still needs
someone to click the stopwatch for them.

I have realised I need others to help and you can too.

I have put in place today to reconnect with some mentors
I have had over the years and toss around a few ideas and
thoughts with them.

I need their help to make sure I am on track to achieve
what I wish.

What about your Business. Do you need a hand?
Everyone does.

The first place to start is with your Marketing.

Yes, you need to look at this and get a plan underway.

So to help, I have put together a 22 page book titled,
“There Are Only 8 Types Of Emails”.

It gives you explanations and examples and it will
be dogeared from your use within a few very short months.

You can get it FREE from here: ONLY 8 TYPES OF EMAIL

I hope you do because I don’t wish to post again
and say, “Sorry, But I Have to Tell You This.”
