Email Marketing For The Fish and Chip Shop

Hi Everyone

Last week I placed a post about this question I received
from the local Fish and Chip shop owner.

“This email stuff you do, it couldn’t possibly work for us!”


my reply was…

“Why not?  Seems to me you are in a perfect business for
it to be used.  Plenty of daily/weekly customers enter your shop.”

Let me continue.

If the shop owner knew the names, contact details and a little bit of
information about their customers then they could market directly to them.

And the most economical and cost effective way to do this is with email.

For example with around 400 weekly customers the Fish and Chip owner
could forward an email to their customers about a spec.ial offer.

This could be an email sent out during a slow trade day to boost daily sales or
an email about a great opportun*ity which came to them.

Let me be more specific.

If the Fish and Chip shop owner knew their customers liked a
spec.fic type of fish and theowner managed to get some extra they
could send a message which might say,


“Hi (Customer’s Name)

A vessel we usually pur-chase from had a terrific haul of whiting last night.

They normally expect to net ‘x’ amount of  kilos but for some reason,
and they don’t know if it was the full moon, the new nets they used or
just plain good luck but they managed to almost double their ca*tch.

What this means is they had to offload the fish and they offered some to me.


I am a tough bargainer and

I refused to pay top dollar to take this surplus whiting
– not because the fish isn’t any good –
actually it’s the best whiting we have bought for months

but because…

I knew they didn’t have a ready market.

And for you this means we have whiting galore, or a little bit more than usual.

So (Customers Name) I propose to make you this mouth-watering offer.

Come into our shop tonight or tomorrow night and receive two exquisitely fresh serves of delicious white-fleshed whiting for the price of one.

That’s right order one – GET one FR*EE

And I know (customer’s name) you are a whiting fan aren’t you.

The extra whiting we have isn’t an enormous amount which will mean it
will sell out tonight or tomorrow so maybe it might be better to give me a call on xxxxxxxxx so I can save some pieces for you.

This offer is only going to people on my email list.


customers who just walk into our store won’t know about it.

I’d dislike you  to say to me next time you’re in,
“Hey, I heard you had a whiting offer the other day.
Thanks for letting me know !!!”


Can you see the value of email marketing???

It’s a most cost effective way to get your message out there quick, reliably
and personal.

Sure you may not have a Fish and Chip shop but I can guar*antee the principles in all businesses are the same.

It’s about:

  1. The List;
  2. The Relationship you have with your list; and
  3. The Offer.

If you have a great product and service and collect names, email addresses and
a little info about your client you can increase sales revenue in your business.

But don’t just take my word for it.
