You should be like the Lioness

I was talking to a business owner this morning.

One that has been receiving my emails for many years yet hasn’t started to email market to their customers.

When I asked why, the reply came back…

“Because we are too proud to use email.  We create glossy brochures and advertise on the radio and T.V.  “We are beyond email marketing.”

“OK”  I replied.  “How’s business ?”

“Well…pretty crap at the moment and very slow.”  he responded.

“What’s your return on sales from your existing marketing ?  I then chirped in.

“Gees, we don’t know that mate, you can’t measure advertising success !” I was informed.  (Kurt’s thought on this astonishing statement…what the Beejees !!!)

The call went on for another few minutes and then I had to ask…

“Why did you contact me if you don’t wish to know more about email marketing and how it can help you get more sales ?

“I just wanted to see if you were a real person as I have been reading your emails for around 5 years.  Not everyone of them but on and off for 5 years.”  Came the response.

I had to quickly let this guy know where I saw his reasoning.

I said…

“Mate at the moment you remind me of a proud lion.  Sitting on your haunches waiting for customers to contact you.  Or in Lion terms, waiting for the lioness to return with the food.”

“You should be like the Lioness who hunts for the food.  She doesn’t wander aimlessly in the jungle.  She goes straight to where she knows she has hunted successfully before. That is how she and her family survive.  She certainly doesn’t
sit there and wait for the food to come to her.”

“Email Marketing is like the Lioness.  You are going direct to where your customers and prospects are.  That is how and why you have their email address in the first place.”

I then finished…

“Buddy, the type of marketing you are doing is what I call… Shotgun Marketing !  You are firing heaps of pellets out into space hoping one will hit in the right place.”

“Email Marketing is like 303 or Missile Marketing.  It goes direct to where your customers are.”

“You may think you are beyond Email Marketing and that is fine because I know people will always find evidence to back up their belief systems.”

“But if you truly wish to learn more about email marketing and how to make more sales then book into one of my consult times.  It will be the best two hours on marketing you could invest.”
