Does It Really Matter What Subject Line You Use?

I sent over a few emails I wrote for a client yesterday.

They understand the importance of keeping in contact with their troops and to send out regular emails.

They also received several email subject lines to entice their readers to open.

They sent back an email with a question which I first thought…

Well let’s say it…

Gobsmacked me.

Now it wasn’t their fault nor was I thinking it a dumb question.

I was just thinking.

“How did I fail them ?”

It was honestly a question I thought they would know and if they didn’t I was to blame.

Their question was…

“Does it really matter what subject line I use ?”

Gosh… Kurt.  Haven’t you spoken to them about this before.

Never mind – let’s fix it now.

Ok, statistics tell us 35% of recipients open emails based on the subject line alone, and

44% of email recipients made at least one purchase last year based on a promotional email.

What this means is regardless of how relevant, personalized or timely your email is, the subject line can determine the success of your campaign.

Most advertising gurus knew 100 years ago the headline drives the purchase.

I am going to go out on a limb here and guess your subject lines are written by yourself and you do not put much time into them.

And that is understandable.

You knew the email subject line was important but it’s far better to click the send button and get it out there.

You probably don’t have the time either.

Instead, you and your staff rely on a putting together any ol’ subject line just to get your email out.
