“Na… I’m not that much of a Bastard”

Everyday one of my clients or I send out marketing emails.

Most days there are multiple emails being transmitted through cyberspace.

Why ?

Because it is the quickest, most affordable and effective way to get your message to your customers.

And it makes money !

It was not always like this for me though.

I once owned a retail store in Garden City Shopping Centre Queensland.

I sold animation art.  Cartoon cels.  From Disney, Hanna Barbera and Warner Bros.

It was a great learning experience.

Some days I simply sat behind my counter and stared out into an empty mall.

I often looked at the phone in hope it would ring.

Gosh…

I was proud to have the cleanest timber-shop-floor in the Centre.  It sparkled.  (The secret was everyday pouring a half-a-cup of vinegar into the hot water before mopping)

It was quite a challenging time.  Everything in the shop was valued between $500-$5000.

I got good at Creating the Interest, Overcoming Objections and Closing The Sale.

Within 18 months I sold over $1,000,000 of cartoon cels.  I was on fire.

But I didn’t do it on my own.

I didn’t just learn from doing.

I also learned from some of the Masters like Zig Ziglar, Denis Waitley, Jim Rohn.

I had a banking background and worked as a sales and leadership trainer for a major bank.
(I am still used as a trainer by leading RTO’s.  We just don’t grow on trees.)

I had a tax business on the side with over 1200 clients and brought in around six figures all whilst still working in the bank.

I also undertook a two-year home study course from the doyen of marketers, Jay Abraham. (Still the best in the world in my opinion).

But then the inexplicable happened.

My wife fell pregnant again.  Along came son #4.  A Queenslander.

But we were from Adelaide.  Wife #1 was finding it tough.

She got her mother to come and help.

For six months !!!

I couldn’t cope.

What man can have his mother-in-law draping around his house for six months ?!

So I kicked her out.  “Get back to Adelaide.” I said.

She left.

It was great.

Until…

My wife visited me in the store one day.

She said, “I can’t cope with four boys aged 6,3,2,1 on my own I want to go home.”

I said, “Fine… the bus stop is outside.”  (Na… I’m not that much of a Bastard)

I said, “What do you mean, home?”

She said, “Adelaide.”

Gulp…

“Adelaide?” I choked – looked around at the $180,000 I had invested in the store.

“Yep…Adelaide.” she reiterated.

“But…” I grasped for words.

I was sternly interrupted with, “There are no buts…Adelaide.”  “And that’s that.”

So my life a banker, trainer, tax agent, retail store owner was about to take
another twist.

I walked away from the store.  Lost $180,000 as Shopping Centre Managers’ don’t take too kindly when you break a lease 3 years early.

Yet…

It was all worth it.

I came back to Adelaide and started my business consultancy.

Have been doing it for 17 years.

After helping numerous small business clients with business help I ventured into email marketing around 7 years ago.

And I have got pretty good at it.

But it was also a challenge at first.

Most small business operators don’t market.

Especially not by email.

They are scared to venture into this space for fear of being marked as spammer and losing customers.

Now I wish to make a point here…

That’s a valid and realistic concern.

If you don’t know the basics of ethical email marketing you will more than likely end up doing exactly that.

I need to add a huge disclaimer if you consider any business sending email to be a spammer.

Email marketing is not spamming.

If the subscribers whom received your email have asked for it and you stick to basic rules and you honor their unsubscribe requests then it’s not spamming.

For example I have one client who every day sends an email to his subscribers containing finance news.

How can they be a spammer when:

The subscribers have to go through a confirmed opt-in process before they are even added to the mailing lists;

The client does not manually add any email addresses to the list, except  customer requests;

Our system automatically processes all unsubscribe requests;

The client immediately removes any requests for unsubscribes if the subscriber does not use the links provided within their emails;

They use me to monitor delivery and manage their daily email campaigns.

You see  email marketing is not spamming.

In fact every business owner should email to their lists at least weekly.

And…

Every business owner should be looking at Christmas to get their messages out there.
