For too long the promise of riches and immediate sales by sending just one email needs to be exposed as a phony and a hoax pledge.

The fact is Email Marketing Open Rates; Read Rates; Click Through Rates should not be a mysterious number held tightly by some IT geek or an email marketer.

They should be numbers the everyday small business owner should be aware of so you can make sound, logical and practical decisions in your business.

The Digital Marketing Group – an online marketing company recently revealed they sent out 58 million emails during 2013 and their open rates barely rose above 6.6%.
And these guys know what they are doing.

The difference between companies like this and your business is ONE solid point.

The relationship you have with your customers.

The reality is email marketing is not about tips and techniques to fool your recipients.

The truth to the matter is, Email Marketing is about:

  1. The List (the database);
  2. The Relationship you have with your list; and
  3. The Offer you are giving them.

When you get these working together you can easily beat these rates and achieve higher results.

I keep statistics for my emails and my clients and we see what works and what does not work.

We continually achieve open rates around the 15.5% and read rates around 20.3% because it is about getting to know your customers.

But it is not about rates.  

Quite frankly rates are…

Meaningless if you are not making sales.

You need to be aware of your customers fears, anxieties, concerns and their desires.

It is also getting the point Email Marketing is about sending a series of emails to obtain a predetermined target. 

Is not about sending one email a month a saying, “Well didn’t work !”

It is about being at the front-of-your-customers minds when they are ready to buy.  Not when you are ready to sell.

  3. Both Nick. Firstly, all emails should be written in the ‘first person’. i.e As if you are writing to a solitary person. The best way to do this is to use a conversational tone as if you were having a yarn to one person.
    Also one email = one message. Don’t confuse a recipient by talking about many subjects. When confronted with multiple choices people do nothing. Secondly your main list should be also segmented into sub-lists (meaningful sub-groups) to allow you to send specific messages which is pertinent to each group. That way you can send one overall message to everyone if that is what the email is about or you can send multiple emails to multiple sub-lists which contains a message they would expect. And finally – Happy New Year too.

    When you say that the relationship you have with your list is important, do you mean that you should be conversational and treat the process as you would if you were trying to connect with one person, or do you mean understanding what your list members want ie. by segmentation etc. so you can deliver the information and solutions they need more accurately?
